Dear Coachella Valley Art Scene Readers,

Hello!  And welcome back to another fabulous week here on the Coachella Valley Art Scene!  We have so much in store for you… and most of the news/events/invitations/stuff is FREE!!  Nothing better then ‘free’ in the summer.  Yesterday was 115 degrees, today should be about the same…. so what you loose money-wise on air conditioning bills, you make up for in free/cheap entertainment.  See, life in the desert isn’t so bad after all….

First things first….there are 4 Special Film Screenings in the Coachella Valley this week!  Yes, four!  Wednesday night at the University of California, Riverside – Palm Desert campus, in association with their Lit Flick series, they will be screening the box office hit, Into the Wild at 7:00pm for free!  Come Thursday night, you have two options; either a Free Foreign Film screening at the Palm Springs Art Museum or come watch the last film in the American Documentary Film Fest at the Camelot Theater at 7:30 for a cheap $10 price.  Friday night, there’s no better place to be in the Coachella Valley then under Marilyn Monroe’s dress for the Free Film Series that projects her best films after the sun sets.

However, if you can’t make any of those film screenings we have another option for you.  Tune into this week’s Commercial Break to find our favorite hand-picked YouTubes that were filmed in, or based around, the Coachella Valley.   You never know what we might pull from the web; could be a music video, a comedic act, a random act of kindness, or a kinda weird piece of video art…..so make sure to come back to see what our fickle finger will pick next!

For those reading all this and thinking….”Helloooo, it’s Summer!  I don’t want to be cooped up in a dark room watching movies!!! I need to be living the ‘Palm Springs dream’ – living life poolside while tanning, sipping fruity drinks and listening to mellow grooves from the A.M. to late into the P.M.!” –  I completely understand.  In fact, I am a big fan of stepping away from screens of any sort (computer and silver) and slathering on that SPF 100 to lay out and soak up Vitamin D all day.  It’s one of my favorite pastimes.  I’m such a fan of the lifestyle that I teamed up with Alf Alpha and the Ace Hotel & Swim Club to bring you….  the World Famous Pool Party!!!!!!  Yup!!!  This Saturday afternoon from noon until 5:00pm Alf Alpha and The Coachella Valley Art Scene will be rockin’ at the Ace Hotel & Swim Club poolside.  Alf Alpha will be DJing interesting tunes and yours truly (The Coachella Valley Art Scene) will be offering our famous free craft table to anyone who wants to take a break and get creative or experiment while un-raisin-ing themselves.  It’s going to be a fabulous time – don’t miss out!  Here is a the event invite: http://www.facebook.com/events/244897228929414/?ref=ts

Coming up next Saturday is the opening to “There’s No Place Like Home” at the CVAS Art Space inside Epidemic Skateboard Shop in Palm Desert!!!  We are so excited!  In the past we have featured Kylie Knight, Ron Cameron, Robert Medina and now… a collaboration show between Aaron Hansen and Rick Rodriguez.  They will be debuting a more extensive showing of their “Instaprints,” iPhone art.  We decided to give them a solo show once we saw the positive response from their work at BIRBA for our Art of Kraft events.  Their Instaprints would sell out 30 minutes into the show – it was great.  These guys are not only great multi-discinpinary artists….but they are also creatives that are showing us how an artist can make art from anything…even their iPhone.  Once you see this art show you will never look at your iPhone the same again…the possibilities are truly endless.  We will be sharing with you more information on this art show, and a few others, in this week’s rendition of Art Shows a Go Go.  So keep an eye (or your iPhone alerts) our for that!

As you know, the CVAS is a blog of many surprises and much randomness.  You never know what you’re gonna see pop up on here, or not pop up on here….hey, its’ the Internet, what can you expect?!  The World Wide Web is one of the most complicated places to hang out in sometimes.  So, keep a look our for Random posts about random things.  However, one thing that isn’t so random that has been consistently posting here on the blog for the past four years is our famous Things 2 Do Thursday post!  Things 2 Do Thursday likes to list all the cool, interesting, and local music going down after dark in the desert on a weekly basis.  If you are looking to go check out some local bands and/or support some local venues then this is the blog to revisit come Thursday evening.

In the meantime, make sure to stay up-to-date on our Twitter & Tumblr.  Twittering is fun, but we personally love Tumblr-ing.  If we could curate a photography gallery space it would look something like this: www.thecvartscene.tumblr.com.

Big thank you to all our supporters.  We do this for you, and couldn’t do it without you.  Much love and appreciation!

Sincerely,

sarah@thecoachellavalleyartscene.com
