ShortFest goes digital for the third annual edition of SHORTFEST ONLINE, a special selection of 11 great short films in different genres and formats to brighten up your web-based world. This entertaining sampling of shorts includes live action, documentary and animated films, and the package will be up online through the end of August.

Each film in the package is eligible to win the ShortFest Online Film Festival, to be announced at our Closing Night Awards Ceremony, June 23 at the Camelot, but voting for your favorite online short from the package will run only through the end of Saturday, June 22, so please be prepared to vote anytime you go online to view the films during the run of ShortFest.

We are so excited to kick off another season of AOK this Saturday at Birba in Palm Springs!!  This season we really took it upon ourselves to reach out and find some amazing, talented and unique crafters/artists out there in the Coachella Valley.  What did we find?…well, a little bit of wood and wig works, photography and fashion, iPhone art and mixed media masterpieces.

Our first show of the season (June of 2013) was a success.  The show highlighted Chris Sanchez, Casen Creation, Sven, The Beauty Bandit, and Ashley Coy.  Free crafts of course were available and presented by The Coachella Valley Art Scene.  Alf Alpha spun records.  BIRBA served up amazing cocktails and yummy food dishes.

This month, we are going for an entirely different theme – AN ALL GIRL KRAFT SHOW!!!  We haven’t seen this in the desert yet and thought it would be fun to make it happen.  So, we called upon some amazing crafters in the desert: Angela Kinley, Tea with Iris, Maya Kalabic, Julie Levine and Kristin Winters.  Each of these fantastic ladies will showcase their latest creations; clothes, art works, wood works, glitter pop, paintings, journals, jewelry, etc.  To say the least, we are ultra excited.

Thanks.  Enjoy! - – - xx  Joshua Tree Desert-Glam Band Gram Rabbit is Braised and Confused xx written by Andy Lara of 4evertwentysomething xxxx “So cry me a river/ I won’t drown/ And find me a sinner/ I’ve been found,” sings Jesika von Rabbit on “Final Clap Fever,” the first track off Gram Rabbit’s latest release Braised And Confused. Von Rabbit’s announcement that she is perfectly comfortable with whatever comes her way comes as no surprise, since Gram Rabbit, from the beginning of their career, has been a band that defies genres and embraces the natural weirdness that many bands annihilate in order to conform to whatever is trendy. The sonic result of flying the freak flag high is a band that isn’t afraid to experiment, and, as a result, is comfortable in any environment; from playing the hometown music festival Coachella, to L.A. night clubs, to local dive bars, to touring the country with the like-minded  Western band Spindrift, Gram Rabbit exhibits the drive and determination that is necessary to survive in the ever-shifting music world. But this resilience might stem from their hometown– a hot desert that practically necessitates a hard shell and determination to stay afloat. xx xx Hailing from the legendary high-desert town Joshua Tree, California, Gram Rabbit is a proper desert band: from the mysticism, to the strangeness, they’ve got it down. The band’s newest self-released album (their seventh full-length) is a strange combination of Hollywood glam and desert wasteland poured into a huge stew with futuristic electronics added for kicks. While it seems that Gram Rabbit was only in the kitchen for a short while (it’s been just over a year since their last release), Braised and Confused is anything but undercooked. A pun on the 1993 film Dazed and Confused, the album’s title seems like a contradiction: it suggests the band is fully-boiled/prepared/baked  but also undecided, which I disagree with. To me, the band seems focused and mature. After all, the desert is a serene, almost austere place where contemplation and rejuvenation are encouraged. Anyone who has spent time in the desert can admit it is a great place to pause and reflect; the high desert, especially romantic at night, is THE place to catch the mountains pointing upwards at the stars in all their uninterrupted and luminous glory. The union of calm atmosphere and scenic landscapes is notoriously desirable for people needing (or being required to take) a break from lightning days. After all, the desert is home to Betty Ford Center, a rehab facility for the A-list Hollywood stars. xx xx But for someone permanently residing in the desert, on the other hand, the quiet, and almost distraction-less atmosphere, can translate to insane amounts of productivity, as illustrated by Gram Rabbit’s seventh album in nine years, Braised and Confused. Yet Gram Rabbit is not the first band to find the high-desert a bottomless well of inspiration: Both Queens of the Stone Age and Arctic Monkeys have recorded albums there, and U2 named an album after the city’s eponymous flora, not to mention, Gram Parsons’ tragic morphine overdose in Joshua Tree at 26. In other words, Joshua Tree is a unique and memorable town with a lot to offer. xx xx Joshua Tree’s latest creative output, Braised and Confused, which you can check out on the band’s bandcamp, is seven tracks (five new, original songs, an interlude, and a Blur cover) of pure psychadelic-glam-desert rock perfect for a drive from Joshua Tree through Tinseltown’s gay little sister, Palm Springs. The songs are upbeat, rock numbers that demand to be played loud. The record is an adventure, a journey, and as such, it must be experienced on the road. Moreover, Jesika Von Rabbit is the ultimate spacegirl with sprezzatura to spare, and she shares it on the record. Her cool voice manages to be robotic, sexy and soft-grunge throughout the record and often at the same time: think of a less drug-addled, yet still rebellious Courtney Love, a rougher and edgier Gwen Stefani, now give her a bubble machine and bunny ears and you have Jesika Von Rabbit. Together with multi-instrumentalist Todd Rutherford and guitarist/producer Ethan Allen, Gram Rabbit crafts a unique brand of electro space-rock tinged with desert psychedelia and grunge-glam charm.       Braised and Confused finds Gram Rabbit primed for superstardom, the question is, how will they get there? Which road will they take? The Cheshire Cat said it best when he found Alice at a fork in the road and answered her question, “Which road should I take?” “Where do you want to go?” he asked. ”I don’t know,” she says. To which he replied, “Then it doesn’t matter.” Because the band’s latest offering is sharp, polished, and sophisticated, I don’t think it will be long before major labels coming knocking. Until then, it is evident Gram Rabbit will keep hopping and dancing to the beat of their own drum, with disregard to how others have grooved. Each of the four deities corresponds to the points of a compass centered on Mount Sumeru, the central world mountain in Buddhist cosmology.The Chatur Maharajas guard the four cardinal directions and four quarters of the earth by facing outward from Mount Sumeru toward the quarter of the world that he supervises. They correspond to the Lokapalas, or world protectors in Hindu mythology. They protect the world by warding off any evil to protect dharma, the essential behaviors that are necessary for maintaining the natural order of things. Dhritarashtra is the leader of the Gandharvas, the celestial musicians, and lives on the eastern side of Mount Sumeru. He is known as the one who upholds the land through harmony. As he so often is, Dhritarashtra jovially plays a veena, a Hindu plucked string instrument, with right hand strumming while the left picks the cords and holds the instrument upright. His instrument represents calm, ease, and comfort, though can also symbolize the importance of harmony and balance; the strings must be neither too tight nor too lose. His light skin stands in stark contrast to the dark blue aureole with surrounding orange-red flames behind him. He is adorned with a gold crown and gold garments and enshrouded with multicolored flowing cloth to emphasize an already regal appearance. Virudhaka stands to his left. He is the leader of the Kumbhandas, a fierce race that lives in the lower heavenly realms, and lives on the southern face of Mount Sumeru. Virudhaka is known as the one who enhances virtue, using his sword of wisdom to control evil. He is also the fiercest of the four kings, as he is often depicted trampling demons underfoot, thus representing the control of evil. In this depiction a light green aureole surrounded by orange-red flames provides contrast to his dark blue skin. His head is adorned with a dragon baring its sharpened teeth, and he wears large gold earrings. His dragon belt matches his headdress and he holds his sword upright in one hand and a flute in the other. Virudhaka is brilliantly dressed in regal gold costume, just as his counterpart Dhritarashtra is. This incredible Thangka masterfully depicts two of the four directional dieties of Hinduism as colossi floating above a divine scene of women and men bathing in rivers and dancing in the mountains. The intense hues of the chromatic palette, the deeply intricate design, and the culturally resonate subject matter work together in creating a piece that is a true masterpiece. Open Score was performed on October 14th. It began with a tennis game between Frank Stella and his tennis partner, Mimi Kanarek. Rauschenberg adopted one of the oldest forms of performance that everyone recognizes, a tennis match, and made it into dance. He also used the game “to control the lights and to perform as an orchestra.” 34 minutes.
