Many of The Coachella Valley Art Scene readers did not have the opportunity to live through the Golden Years, so it’s a bit more of a challenge to know what to go for the night of.

With a little help from the Internet, fashion blogs, and magazines we have compiled an Outfit Inspiration Guide to the Doo Wop for all of our readers/party-goers.  Make sure to look at the photos and read the text to get a better understand of not just what they wore in the 1950′s, but why.

Also, make sure to scroll all the way down to get a hand-selected recommendation list of retail shops around town to purchase these types of clothing/accessory items.  Some shops we chose are more high end vintage while the others are literally thrift shops, you pick what your price range is.

The Look: Tea Time

How to achieve the look:

The Outfit

Women’s fashion in the 1950s was often sharp, decorative and tailored to fit. Dresses were the most commonly worn article of clothing, and a typical 1950′s woman had a dress for everything from housework to a night out on the town.

Swing skirts: The top of the dresses were normally form-fitting and often required a bodice to tightly hold in the chest and waist. The skirt was often pleated or otherwise textured and flowed out from the waist, whipping around the ankles or heels in the wind. The poodle skirt, similar to the swing skirt, was also popular in the 1950.
Pencil skirt: The pencil skirt dress, opposite to the swing, was equally popular in the 1950. More formal than the swing skirt, the pencil skirt and dress fitted tightly at the waist and all the way down the legs to the woman’s ankles, defining her curves. Pencil skirts were worn to work, fancy outings and other formal occasions.

Cardigan sweaters: In the 1950s cardigans became a staple since they could be worn well with any style skirt. Cardigans became more decorative and elaborate with lots of beading details, specialty buttons, and designs.

Patterns & Style:   Colors ranged from sober solids to bright and wild patterns. Strong, solid colors such as gray, black and navy blue were worn to work and for formal events; dresses in floral patterns were often worn for casual affairs such as a day in the park; highly decorative swing skirt dresses were reserved for formal, celebratory events.

The Accesories

The stiletto shoe emerged in the 1950s, and featured a tall, thin heel and rounded, or “peep,” toe which showed off the first few toes. During the day, more modest shoes with sturdier heels, like Mary Janes and flats, were common as well.

Hats:  Hats tended to be small, pillbox types, and scarves were also common hair coverings. Costume jewelry — big, gaudy, Gloves: Ladies wore gloves in public during the day and night.

Purses: According to Stephanie Pedersen’s book “Handbags: What Every Woman Should Know,” there was a purse etiquette recommended to the 1950s woman: Women who were top heavy with broad shoulders were advised to avoid purses with short straps, as to not add more heft above the waistline. Similarly, women who are pear shaped were warned not carry bags with long straps that fell below the waistline. Other tidbits of etiquette advised women to carry bags that complemented their size. For example, petite women should stick with smaller purses and large women should tote more substantial bags. – as stated on ehow.com.  How silly they were!!!

Men’s casual styles in the 1950s frequently featured several pieces, including khakis, vests and casual shorts with slip-on shoes. The casual look in this decade also was inspired by television programs.

Shirts: Men’s casual shirts in the 1950s took a plaid turn. Pink was a popular color for men in this era, and plaid often included pink and blue; multi-colored shirts featured yellow and black. Men often wore shirts untucked with the tail out.

Pants: Khakis were a fashion staple in 1950s casual men’s wear. Men wore them around the house after work hours and on the weekends. The 1950s khaki pant had a plain front, heavy zipper fly and was cut with a slightly tapered leg.

Shoes: The slip-on shoe was the style of choice in casual footwear for men. Slip-ons were dressy enough to wear to work, but comfortable enough to wear around the house.

Sweaters: Sweaters were popular casual wear in the 1950s. The cardigan sweater and wool flannel pants offered a clothing option for leisure attire. Men wore loafer-style shoes for casual dress. - as seen on ehow.com

I don’t know about you, but I am particularly excited for this Saturday’s Food Truck Festival.  One of my favorite reasons/excuses to go to Los Angeles is for their food culture and trends, including the recent emergence of Food Trucks into popular culture.  

My favorite thing about these food trucks is that you can opt to taste more then just your standard Mexican tacos and burritos (not knockin’ ‘em though!); you can go Asian, go Cuban, go French, for fast food or for higher end cuisine.  Whatever pleases your palate.

This Saturday there will be 60 (yes, sixty) of the most popular Food Trucks in the scene hailing from the big cities such as Los Angeles and San Francisco right here in Palm Springs.

Gotta be honest, my mouth is salivating and I better wrap up this article quick before my tummy starts growling and/or drool on the keyboard….. See ya there!!!!

About the Event:

Media personality, event producer, and “Minister of Culinary Awareness”, Cliff Young of Out To Eat on KVCR-PBS Television, has brought together over forty gourmet food trucks for the first annual Palm Springs Food Truck Festival taking place Saturday, February 4th from 10:00am to 5:00pm outside the Spa Resort Casino at 401 East Amado Road. The event will feature a number of celebrities and operators from The Cooking Channel’s Food Truck Revolution and Food Network programs Eat Street, Tyler Florence’s The Great Food Truck Race including “Crepes Bonaparte”, “Devilicious”, “Border Grill”, “Calbi Truck”, “The White Rabbit”, ”Great Balls On Tires”, “Ragin Cajun”, “Tapa Boy” and season winners, “Grill Em All” among others.

A portion of the proceeds raised at the event will benefit the Palm Springs High School Music programs and Marching Band.

Festival admission is $10.00 general admission. Free entry for children six and under. General admission is from 11:00am through 5:00pm. Dogs are permitted but must be on a harness or leash at all times.

The Frysmith truck serves fries that eat as a meal. How does that work, you ask? The scientific answer is: We throw stuff on top. It all gets piled on hand-cut Kennebec potatoes fried twice in canola oil (the only oil good enough to be named after Canada). BOO-Yah!!: an artisanal ice-cream sandwich that combines our warm and soft Chunk-n-Chip cookies with one of our many flavors of ice cream awesomeness. It’s a strange word isn’t? From that point forward, it is the people who have the power to take the event to the next level.  And how does one do that you might ask?  By simply ‘dressing the part’ the night of.  It’s quintessential for the party goers to add their theatrical element to the event to bring it to life, to be the performance artists.

So, where does one go to in the desert to get the perfect vintage, semi-formal attire for the evening – for men and women?…

A couple weeks ago, while casually strolling the boulevard (more commonly know as Palm Canyon in Palm Springs, and even more specifically the Uptown Design District) we stumbled across an adorable boutique that was nestled inbetween a clutter of store fronts.  We poked our heads in out of interest from the window display and fell in love.  Inside the boutique were classic threads from the 1950′s-1980′s.  On the front door of the store was a flyer to a Mid-century fashion show that was going to take place at the Ace Hotel, curated by them.  It was love at first sight!  They had the element that was missing to Doo Wop in the Desert… the fashionable threads to dress the people and bring their characters to life and really make the event a memorable one…

The boutique that we walked into that day was the Deja Vu Vintage Finery.  It is located at 664 North Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs, CA.  Not only is it just down the street from the Ace Hotel, but it is also a new local business in town that actually has a long history, and a bright future ahead.

Deja Vu Vintage Finery: We were previously located inside Caroldean’s Resale Therapy and now have moved to our wonderful new location in the heart of the Uptown Design District on North Palm Canyon Drive.

Old Location:

We are very excited to be in this neighborhood featuring lots of vintage furniture stores, clothing boutiques and retro shops as well as design oriented gift and accessory stores.

Deja Vu Vintage Finery: Caroldean Ross has been in retail and fashion for over 30 years with previous stores on El Paseo, as well as Resale Therapy. 

William Miller is a noted Interior Designer,  former model, collector and expert on all things vintage, especially fashion.

Deja Vu Vintage Finery:  We are inspired by the quality of the Vintage pieces that we carry.  We have everything for Men and Women from The 1950’s to the 1980’s.  Our clothing selections are all premium vintage of top quality.

Deja Vu Vintage Finery:   Déjà Vu has been selected to do a major Fashion show during Modernism Week at The Ace Hotel & Swim Club which will reflect the places that were significant in the mid-century in Palm Springs and the clothing that would have been worn there.  We are thrilled to present a glimpse into the past history of Palm Springs through fashion!  The show is Feb. 16^th , starts at 7:00pm and is located inside the Commune of the Ace Hotel in Palm Springs.  Tickets are $20.00 and benefit the Palm Springs Preservation Foundation.

Hello all, and welcome back to another sunny and glorius week here on The Coachella Valley Art Scene!!

This week is the week before the Doo Wop in the Desert.  We are so hype!  We can barely contain ourselves.  There’s so much coming up in our near future, we can barely contain the excitement!  So, let’s get down to business and get this blog-a-rollin’!

First things first, we want to thank Deja Vu Vintage Finery  in Palm Springs for being such a wonderful sponsor to the Doo Wop!  As you may, or may not have seen, we’ve posted about 25 photos on our Facebook page to inspire and demonstrate how to dress properly for the Doo Wop (considering many of our younger readers did not live through that era).  They came out great and many thanks go towards Deja Vu Vintage Finery for supplying the fashionable threads to make it happen.  Since posting all of those photos, many have you have contacted me wanting to know more about Deja Vu – so, this week we bring you an INTERVIEW: Deja Vu Vintage Finery.  They are a great little boutique in Palm Springs that just open their doors this month and will be having a ribbon cutting ceremony in a few days, in addition to a vintage fashion runway show at the Ace Hotel on Thursday, Febuary 16th!  More details coming soon…

Tonight, in Desert Hot Springs at the Dillion Roadhouse, a good friend of mine from my Middle School days (shout out to DSMS), Derrick Henkins, will be debuting is 50+ art piece solo show titled, “Dark Days and Long Nights.”  And yes, you read correctly, it’s a 50+ piece art show.  And yes, you also read correctly that it’s his debut art show.  The driving force behind the inspiration to produce so much art at one time?… a tragic life experience that recently occurred.  In healing from the tragic occurrence, Henkins has turned to art as an emotional outlet, and because so has produced some truly amazing work.  Tonight at the Dillion Roadhouse, “Dark Days and Long Nights”, will allow all viewers to take a trip inside his head and a way to support Derrick through these tough time.  More information coming soon.

Another event happening at the Dillion Roadhouse this week, on Saturday, is the freshest Hip Hop event that the desert has seen in a while, Trillwave Be The Motto.  The Coachella Valley Art Scene doesn’t sponsor too many shows, be we were so quick to sponsor this one because we wanted to show our support in how much we are behind these artists and this particular movement in Hip Hop.  Yeah, it’s gonna be that dope!!  Other sponsors to the show are members of our extended family; EastofLA.com & UTB Lifestyle (Wiz Khalifa’s Taylor Gang clothing designers).Trillwave Be The Motto will be starring Alf Alpha with his special guests Pheo & Cashius Green.  In addition, local hip hop performers that we love Will Dabeast and Porvoked will be rocking the stage.  DJ Jimbo Jenkins of EastofLA.com will be providing the tunes in between the acts, keepin’ everyone steady vibin’ all night long.  It’s going to be a good show and we are super stoked about it.  More info coming after the jump!

Also on Saturday…. FOODIES, start your engines!!!  This Saturday is the Palm Springs Food Truck Festival!!!!!  Check out their website here.  I don’t know about you – but I am particulary excited about this.  It’s every foodies dream, right here in the desert.  No need to drive all the way to LA to stand in hour long lines, all your favorite LA trucks will be here in the desert for one day – so don’t miss out!  More info to really sink your teeth into coming in a little bit!

Inside scoop on the art gallery world… there are some great shows going on this weekend.  In Palm Springs, the annual Palm Springs Jurried Art Show is happening this Friday.  However, not to be passed up is Melissa Morgan Fine Art Gallery‘s opening exhibition celebration of “Color Balance” this Thursday evening.  More info in our Art Shows a Go Go this week!

Explorations of the Desert will also be making a comeback this week, and will be inspired by Palm Springs in the 1950′s… the Golden Era.  This exploration will also a time travel, all to inspire for the Doo Wop.

Speaking of the Doo Wop in the Desert…. it’s just around the corner!!  Next Friday it’s going down at the Ace Hotel and we are excited to see you there.  All the decor has been purchased, the bands have been picked, the Hearts & Crafts table is ready, and the cupcakes… well, those will be made the day of (of course).  It’s our favorite event to throw all year long, one that really aims to bring back the art of romance via dressing properly, being courteous, slow dancing, and writing love letters.  We supply the space, and you put on the show.  Let’s do it!!!!  Friday, February 10th at the Ace Hotel’s Commune… see you there sweetie pie!
